Unity Candles, Bringing People Together
Unity refer to the new religious wedding ceremonial added by the Protestant Church, however no traditional religious institution (like the Orthodox or Catholic Churches) will recognize something like that, given the fact that they consider it a heresy. Yet, there are many people who like to be creative in such a a special domain. The Protestants say that the unity symbolize the union between the two families, the ceremonial has the bride and groom holding and lighting a candle together. To some people, it is just a solemn rite, to others it is a vow they make in front of God.
Other elements of the Unity ceremonial
The unity ceremonial uses one imposing pillar candle that represents the unity and another two taper candles. In the beginning of this “disputed” ceremonial the two mothers light the smaller candles, later on, the couple will light the unity candle together with their taper candles. Very often Protestants like to decorate these unity with various pictures, invitations, inscriptions or any other unique items that come to their mind. Given how popular it is, the ceremonial appeared not only among Protestants. It was first used 30 or 40 years ago after being included in a successful movie. The Unity rite is not a must in a Protestant wedding, as it is usually a choice the bride and groom make to strengthen their union.

Researchers sustain that the unity ceremonial is strongly related to the South African Kung ceremony, in which fire has a divine power to bring the hearts of the married couple together. The Protestants added the habit of decorating the unity candles, but the rest resembles ceremonials from cultures other than the Christian one. However, since more and more people are looking for some unique elements to include in their wedding ceremony, this may just be the choice for you. However, it is advisable to talk to the priest that would have to preside over the rite.
